Club HistoryThe Spooky VW club of Essex was started in 1996 by Samantha Marks. She started the club with herself and a small number of friends in the Maldon and Witham area. From here the club began to grow in numbers as the club promoted itself through putting flyers under windscreen wipers. A short time later the club met up with another group of friends with an aircooled persuasion through mutual friends in an up and coming band. This led to the formation of the Spooky VW club, which can almost still be seen today. Following further self-promotion, club members came and went. In the summer of 1998 the club entered a display at the Maldon classic car show. This small show attracts a large number of different cars clubs covering many different types of vehicle. Individually the club did not win any trophies but as a club it won an award for the best display. Beating the multiple club display winners, a local TVR club. In the ultimate search for club promotion Samantha Marks then contacted a local newspaper to inform the of the Spooky VW club and what it had been doing at the Maldon classic car show. This resulted in a photo shoot and club interview, the result of this can be seen below.
This article was then seen buy a local radio station who were interested in the comparisons drawn between the beetle and Porsches, Ferraris and such like. This lead to Samantha giving an interview on the radio to explain the article and further promote the club. Since then the club has maintained a friendly laid-back affair with no rules, no fees, no prediges' and an emphasis on fun.
